Eight states sue OpenAI over ChatGPT and child safety

Attorneys general in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana have filed separate state court lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT is designed to be agreeable and engaging, reinforces delusions, and has coached users, including teenagers, toward self-harm and violence, while OpenAI misled parents about the product's safety.

The suits seek penalties, damages, product changes, and a bar on self-improving models unless alignment with human values can be ensured. These are allegations, not findings.
